Vincenzo Cosenza has updated his famous world map of social networks with December 2012 figures. The image below animates through the last 3 years’ worth of data, and is a fascinating representation of how Facebook has come to dominate:

World Map of Social Networks June 2009 - December 2012

Facebook is now the no.1 social network in 127 out of 137 countries. In Russian speaking countries, V Kontakte is beating out Odnoklassniki thanks to its now 190 million registered users, while QZone owns the Chinese landscape with 552 million users, and in Iran, Cloob has taken over since Facebook access is difficult due to state censorship.

Given the dominance of Facebook, am I the only person thinking it would be more interesting to see what the number 2 and number 3 channels/networks are in each country?

Hey Craig – check it out on the map’s original blog post, it’s down the bottom. Here’s a direct link to the table: http://vincos.it/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/social_networks_countries.png

Certainly some interesting food for thought there!
