How Twitter reacted to Bin Laden's death

Following from Chris’ post about his role in a small part of the story, we thought it worth taking a step back and putting the whole thing in context. FlowingData have helpfully annotated a timeline of Tweets for us:

Tweets per second: Evening of May 1st, 2011

And NM Incite have produced this great infographic giving us the perspective we need:

Osama Infographic

Update: A nice piece from SociaFlow analysing the impact of Keith Urbahn’s Tweet that broke the news of Osama’s death, and comScore look at how people consumed the news across devices.

Twitter’s certainly a powerful medium. This is just evidence of how quickly word spreads. While Twitter is a great source of information, sometimes the validity is still questioned. While many may have first heard about the event on Twitter, they needed to confirm it through news outlets.

Would be interesting to see how many tweets per second Michael jackson’s death created.

I find it really interesting that humor was such a big part of the response. I wonder if that is normal for reaction to an event like this or if it is specific to the OBL killing? Have you guys seen stats broken down like this before?
