Twitter usage in Europe

by Robin Grant in News Google+

Thanks to our friend Marshall Manson, and his interrogation of comScore data, we for the first time have a clear picture of Twitter usage usage in Europe, broken down by country:

Twitter usage in Europe

As he points out though:

It’s worth remembering that while these figures are a useful yard stick for Twitter usage and growth, they likely undercount both substantially owing to the number of Twitter users who interact with the platform via mobile devices and desktop applications like TweetDeck.

If these methods of accessing Twitter were included, I’d guess at somewhere between a 25% to 70% increase (based on these two data points – The Evolving Ecosystem and 40% of All Tweets Come From Mobile). And I imagine that would vary by market (for example that mobile use in Italy would be higher than the average).

Including mobile and desktop, will at least double the usage.

This chart says twitter has almost 3 million users in Germany. And it does not even include all possible touchpoints…that’s not true as far as I can tell. Call it gut feel. But I have no clue how comscore gets to this conclusion.

Okay!? Twitter use in Europe? From what I can see – only six Eruopean countries are in that graph…. What about Scandinavia and eastern Europe? If you can get your hands on a more accurate graph – I’d really like to see it…. Interesting stuff.

You mean “Europe and Middle East minus East Europe and Northern Europe”, right? :-)

    Exactly.. ;)

No worries. Still feels a bit strange to be talking to the National Trust… ;)

Hey Armando – probably not quite as much as that. I’d guess at somewhere between a 25% to 70% increase (based on these two data points – The Evolving Ecosystem and 40% of All Tweets Come From Mobile. And I imagine that would vary by market (mobile use in Italy for example I’d guess would be higher than the average).

According to @ev , mobile only accounts for 46% worldwide.

Which, along with desktop usage, should make it at least a 60% increase regarding web audience.

Interesting to see that the biggest Twitter usage growth has come from the Middle East. Although, it is a shame that there are not more countries within EMEA plotted on the graph, it would have been useful to see how the Nordics and Eastern European countries were performing.

Well, I don’t really know what Marshall Manson means when he says that “users who interact with the platform via mobile devices and desktop applications like TweetDeck”.

There’s a big difference between using an app on your mobile phone or accessing Twitter through your mobile browser, with no app interaction at all. That is, a difference in stats and numbers.

While it is true that 46 percent of active users access Twitter through their phones regularly, when the new Twitter.com design was announced back in September @Ev said that “78 percent of all users access the service through the site”, instead of using either mobile or desktop apps.

So to say whether the usage numbers would double or not is hard at this point, at least until Twitter decides to be a little more clear on the topic.

    Hey Zoe

I agree – it would be great to see a country breakdown for the middle east so we could see if it was a common trend or isolated to a few countries. However, it’s better than nothing!

Hey Gerald. I know I’m taking your comment a little too literally, but you can read more about comScore’s methodology here.

Robin, this is really useful indicative data .. whilst it may not be perfect nor fully comprehensive it’s a whole lot better than we had previously.
