I guess I was pointing out the traffic sources to the websites (for Campaign Monitor and ShareThis). Since you don't have an email newsletter, I suppose the comparison is not easy.

Cheers
Alex

Hey Alexander - I'm sure sure I'd claim I'm an 'authority' - I'm just honestly reporting our stats as I found them.

I'm not sure you're comparing like for like - Campaign Monitor were mostly looking at the results they were getting from their email newsletter (which we don't have - although people can subscribe to We Are Social's RSS feed by email using Feedburner, this is not an email newsletter in the same sense as Campaign Monitor's).

And ShareThis are looking at how content is shared using thier service accoss all of the blogs where it's in use, which is very different again. The vast majority of people sharing We Are Social's content do so either spontaneously themselves or as retweets - not using the Tweet or Share buttons at the bottom of each of our posts.

I too was interested - mainly about the source of traffic. I'm interested in why your stats would differ so markedly from what other "authorities" suggest, such as Campaign Monitor (http://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/post/2981/m...) or ShareThis (http://sharethis.com/blog/2009/12/16/the-value-...). Any thoughts?

Hi Robin,
Great post. Very interesting.

It strikes me that this post is also a good case study into the question of social media and company secrecy. I meet many clients who are nervous about social media because they may let out information that's valuable to competitors. And I imagine you have similar discussions with your clients.

So here you are, bearing all and here I am (a competitor-ish) checking it out. I thought you might be interested to hear how that felt!

When I saw the post I was delighted - "here comes some great competitor intel" I thought. It was fascinating to read your numbers and then to compare them to ours. It was also really interesting to gauge how you were measuring success and most importantly, what things were successful for you.

But the more I read (and the more I compared) the more I realised that beyond satisfying my curiosity, there was surprinsgly little for me, as a competitor, to gain from this. Your experiences are similar to our own (25:35:30:10 with Twitter the big driver of social traffic). And thinking about it, this is not that surprising. If two firms are doing similar stuff, it only bears to reason that the results might be similar.

So in fact the biggest takeaway for me was "this is a great blog post. I am annoyed we didn't get there first. It's powerful search engine fodder and an impressive bit of practicing what you preach."

So I think you've shown it's possible to give out what appears to be valuable, sensitive information without handing a leg-up to competitors. How wonderfully social. Well done
Charlie
