I found that surprising too.

I was certainly hearing panelists refer to Twitter as a problem to be dealt with, much like angry fan mail. I'm not into brand identites etc, but it did seem a bit adversarial - not a conversation.

It is amazing to me how many in the branding community are like generals trying to win the current war with the tactics of the last one. There is the accurate recognition that the world has changed, but then there is the reliance on 40-year-old theories like "positioning" or "brand personality." Sorry, your aim might be true, but the target has changed. You can no longer have a top-down driven brand strategy based on "positioning" or "personality" or the 4 Ps or other relics they taught in school 30 years ago. Consumers control the conversation, and your brand responsibility is to participate and respond, not develop some fanciful "brand personality" or worse, "position" based on what you think consumers should believe. It's the 21st century guys; update your calendars!!

on personalities / mr Fry - ok if he says go and vote BNP no one would do it. thats a huge jump, but if someone did it in a slightly more subtle way could be a problem

However personalities are important in all interactions anyone that works in sales/marketing (not me, hurrah!) knows that 'people buy people' to coin a cliche.
So twitter posing no new threat that wasnt there before.

Does Stephen Fry have too much power? i'm not really sure

I think Mr Fry's defense of his own power was, er, inauthentic.

He wouldn't say vote BNP. He would decry the lack of Englishness around him, and would leave others to interpret this. Morrisey trod this path as well.
