Violette I believe you are right in stressing the importance of the twin angels of social media success: listening to and participating in the conversation.

I am concerned that many companies are not dedicating enough time and/or resources to either of these fundamental aspects. "Conversations need constant monitoring" - as you rightly claim - and they are happening on a 24/7 basis.

I believe that we are about to witness an explosion in social medial metrics that - coupled with the development of ever more sophisticated monitoring tools - will hopefully make the task of monitoring the conversation more straightfoprward and less onerous on businesses of any and every size.

Hey Ben,

Thanks for your comment. On the basis that the study was made in early 2008, what would also be interesting to find out is whether that figure of 19% has grown in line with the exponential growth of Twitter.

Interesting. I remember reading in 'No Logo' that 10% of real conversations feature brands. I guess that number might have increased slightly 8 years on, but the difference between that figure and the 19% you mention is interesting.
